Basic care guide for silver dollar fish, Metynnis argenteus

Thrive in water of pH 6-7
should be kept in schools of at least 5
grow to approximately 5-6 inches
tank size should be at least 75 gallons for a small group
water temp. 72-77F
very calm, peaceful fish, makes them great tank mates for many fish
get scared very easily
go nuts from me turning on the light
cousins of the piranha
act very similar as well, except they are herbivores
feed them cichlid pellets, flakes and algae wafers
mine eat all live plants, even the tough anubias and java ferns
plastic plants are recommended
mid tank level swimmer, needs a lot of open space
very hardy, can tolerate a lot
should have calm, well oxygenated waters
prefer dim lit aquariums, mine don’t do anything with the main light on
lifespan of over 10 years
gender differences, males have a slightly longer anal fin with a tint of red
scatter 300-1000 eggs on leaves that hatch after 4-6 days
make great tank mates for even large aggressive fish like oscar, arowana
several different species
sexual maturity at 1 year old
5-7$ each in Canada
Pretty easy fish to keep – rating of 4 (1 being easy – betta fish)
