To prevent your dog’s nails growing too long and causing possible problems, they may need to be regularly trimmed. Depending on the size of your dog, varying sizes and types of nail clippers are available. For dogs in our hospital we generally use the guillotine type of pet nail clippers. When trimming your dog’s nails it is often easier if you are assisted by a friend. Someone who can hold and keep yoru dog calm. While you are trimming your dog’s nails ensure you do not cut them too short. If your dog has black nails like Zabar here just cut the tips. If your dog has white nails then it may be possible for you to see the pink area containing the blood vessels and nerves. Do not cut the pink area as this will be painful and cause the nail to bleed. Remember there are 4 nails on each paw but many dogs also have a dewclaw on the inside of the lower leg which will also need to be regularly trimmed. If you do accidentally cause a nail to bleed use a styptic powder to control the bleeding.
