1. Get a pair of pointy tweezers
2. Be sure to grab the tick by the head, not the body
3. Pull the tick gently, but firmly under control
4. Dispose of the tick safely by using rubbing alcohol, that prevents disease transmission
5. Clean your pet, especially the area where the tick was located with soap, water, and antiseptic

Some helpful facts about ticks and tick prevention:

Ticks are small arachnids that live by hematophagy on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians. Ticks are vectors of a number of diseases, including Lyme disease, Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and others.

Ticks find their hosts by detecting animals’ breath and body odors, or by sensing body heat, moisture and vibrations. They can’t fly or jump, but many tick species hold onto leaves and grass outstretching their free limbs waiting to climb onto the host. When a host brushes the spot where a tick is waiting, it quickly climbs on and digs in.
