Your pet’s support feeding mixture will vary depending on the health and size of your pet. As a general rule though it should be around the consistency of porridge. When support feeding a chinchilla, hold it upright. Due to the large incisors at the front of the mouth the syringe needs to be placed at the side of the mouth between the lips. The syringe should reach approximately the middle of the mouth and the food expressed on the tongue. After each mouthful, allow your pet to chew and swallow. Normally a chinchilla will take between 0.5-1ml per mouthful, your vet or VA will advise you on the total mixture to feed your chinchilla. Following feeding it is important to clean the areas where food has collected. Gently wipe away any residual food with a tissue. If your chinchilla is excitable or energetic it may be easier to handle if wrapped securely in a towel. When support feeding only the head should be uncovered, however, make sure you are not holding your pet too tightly. Feed in exactly the same way – placing the syrnge in the side of the mouth, between the molars and incisors. Again ebsuring you clean away leftover food. This procedure was performed by Ronnie Ip and thanks to our chinchilla model Cuttlefish Bone.
